Our OTs are experts in helping individuals with sensory processing challenges, a common issue that can affect behaviour, learning, and everyday activities. We assess sensory sensitivities and provide tailored interventions that help clients manage their responses to different sensory stimuli. This might include sensory integration therapy, where clients are exposed to various sensory experiences in a structured, playful environment to help them adapt and respond more effectively.
We also focus on developing sensory diets, personalised plans that incorporate specific sensory activities into daily routines. These activities are designed to help clients maintain an optimal level of arousal and engagement, whether it’s through calming techniques for over-responsiveness or stimulating activities for under-responsiveness.
Education plays a crucial role in our sensory processing therapy. We ensure that families and caregivers understand the nature of sensory processing disorders and how they can create supportive environments at home and school. This holistic approach ensures that our clients can navigate their world more comfortably and effectively.
Sensory processing challenges can manifest in various ways and may include hypersensitivity (over-responsiveness) or hyposensitivity (under-responsiveness) to sensory input, difficulties with sensory discrimination, poor sensory modulation, or sensory-seeking behaviours. Children with sensory processing challenges may exhibit behaviours such as aversion to certain textures or sounds, sensory overload in busy environments, difficulty maintaining attention, or seeking out intense sensory experiences.
Occupational therapy plays a crucial role in supporting children with sensory processing issues by providing individualised interventions aimed at improving sensory integration, modulation, and regulation. Our experienced occupational therapists work closely with children and their families to identify specific sensory challenges and develop tailored intervention plans to address them effectively.
At LEAP Centre, we take a personalised approach to therapy, recognising that each child is unique and may respond differently to sensory input. Our therapists look at each child holistically to gain insight into the child's sensory processing abilities and identify areas of difficulty. Based on our findings and information from the parent planning meeting, we develop individualised intervention plans that incorporate sensory-rich activities and strategies to promote optimal sensory integration and regulation.
Our state-of-the-art sensory gym provides a dynamic and stimulating environment for therapeutic activities aimed at promoting sensory exploration and integration. Equipped with a variety of sensory equipment, including swings, climbing structures, tactile surfaces, and balance tools, our sensory gym offers children opportunities to engage in activities that address their specific sensory needs. Under the guidance of our occupational therapists, children can explore different sensory experiences in a safe and supportive setting.
We believe that parental involvement is essential for the success of therapy. Our therapists work closely with parents and caregivers to provide education, support, and strategies for managing sensory challenges at home. We offer guidance on creating sensory-friendly environments, implementing sensory diets, and supporting children's sensory needs in everyday activities. By empowering parents with knowledge and resources, we enable them to play an active role in supporting their child's sensory development.
Our therapy sessions are focused on achieving functional goals that are meaningful and relevant to each child's daily life. Whether it's improving attention and focus in the classroom, participating in social activities with peers, or managing sensory sensitivities in public places, our interventions are tailored to help children succeed in real-world situations. We work collaboratively with children, families, and other professionals to set achievable goals and track progress over time.
We understand that progress takes time, and our therapists are committed to supporting children and their families throughout their therapy journey. We provide ongoing monitoring, feedback, and adjustments to intervention plans as needed to ensure continued progress and success. Our goal is to equip children with the skills and strategies they need to thrive despite sensory challenges and achieve their full potential.
