Understanding and Responding to Developmental Concerns
At LEAP Centre, we recognise the importance of identifying early signs that may suggest a child is on the autism spectrum. While we do not diagnose autism, our role is to provide support, guidance, and early intervention services for families who have concerns about their child’s development.
Recognising Potential Signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism Spectrum Disorder is characterised by challenges with social communication and interaction, as well as restricted or repetitive behaviours. Each child is unique, but common signs to be aware of include:
1. Social Communication and Interaction
- Delayed speech or lack of language development.
- Limited eye contact, facial expressions, or gestures.
- Challenges in forming and maintaining relationships.
2. Behaviour Patterns
- Repetitive movements or speech.
- Strong adherence to routines or distressed by changes.
- Intense interests in specific subjects.
- Sensitivity to sensory input like sounds or textures.
How We Support Families and Children:
Early Intervention and Support
Our therapists provide early intervention services that can be beneficial for children showing signs associated with autism, such as occupational therapy for sensory challenges and speech therapy such as the Hanen program for communication difficulties. We will provide neuro-affirming practice to make sure that every child is accepted and welcomed.
Guidance on Next Steps
