At LEAP Centre, we believe in creating an environment where every individual’s unique neurological makeup is accepted and welcomed. Our commitment to neurodivergent affirming practice is rooted in the understanding that neurodiversity is a natural and valuable part of human diversity.
This approach stands in contrast to traditional models that often focus on ‘normalising’ or ‘correcting’ autistic behaviours. Instead, we focus on empowering neurodiverse individuals, recognising their strengths, and providing support that honours their individual experiences and perspectives. By embracing neuro-affirming practices, we aim to foster a community where autistic individuals can thrive as their authentic selves.
Neurodivergent affirming practice is an approach that acknowledges and respects the diversity of neurological development, particularly in autistic individuals. It moves away from traditional models that often seek to ‘cure’ or ‘fix’ autism, instead embracing the idea that neurodiversity is a natural variation of human experience. This practice is centred on understanding and accepting each person’s unique neurological profile, focusing on their strengths and abilities rather than perceived deficits.
By adopting a neuro-affirming approach, we shift the focus from trying to change the individual to changing the environment and support systems to better accommodate their needs. This perspective promotes the idea that autistic individuals have intrinsic value just as they are, and our role is to support them in a way that enhances their well-being and autonomy.
At LEAP Centre, we are dedicated to implementing neuro-affirming practices that empower children, respecting their experiences and fostering environments where they can truly thrive.
The principles of neurodivergent affirming practice are grounded in the belief that neurological diversity should be respected and valued. These principles guide our approach at LEAP Centre, ensuring that our support is tailored to the unique needs and strengths of each individual.
Neuro-Affirming Practice is built on eleven foundational principles, each designed to create a supportive environment that honours neurodiversity:
Recognises that neurodivergent people have different identities (like race or gender) that shape their experiences. It's important to consider all these aspects together.
Allows individuals to make their own choices about their bodies and lives, ensuring they have control over their personal decisions.
Believes that everyone can learn and communicate, and encourages finding ways to support this instead of assuming they can’t.
Accepts that different ways of thinking and behaving are normal and valuable, not problems that need fixing.
Challenges the idea that there’s only one ‘right’ way to function, promoting acceptance of all neurological profiles.
Changes traditional ideas of success to be more inclusive, allowing neurodivergent individuals to succeed in their own way.
Helps people speak up for their needs by providing the tools and knowledge to advocate for themselves in all areas of life.
Values the insights of neurodivergent people about their own lives, making sure their voices guide their care and support.
Encourages neurodivergent individuals to see their unique traits as strengths and to build a positive self-image.
Focuses on changing environments to fit neurodivergent people better, instead of expecting them to adapt to society.
Recognises and supports all ways of communicating, including non-verbal and assisted methods, ensuring everyone can express themselves.
These principles guide the practices at LEAP Centre, ensuring that neurodivergent individuals are supported in a way that respects their unique identities, needs, and strengths, creating an environment where they can thrive.
Here are some of the specific therapy treatments at LEAP Centre that align with neurodivergent affirming practices:
Sensory processing therapy supports individuals in understanding and managing sensory inputs in a way that aligns with their unique sensory needs. By creating a sensory-friendly environment, it helps reduce stress and anxiety, allowing individuals to engage with the world in a more comfortable and regulated manner.
Social skills groups are designed to help individuals build social connections in a way that respects their individual communication styles and comfort levels. Instead of enforcing typical social behaviours, these groups encourage authentic interactions and help individuals navigate social situations on their terms.
LEAP Centre supports the use of AAC devices, which allow individuals who may struggle with verbal communication to express themselves effectively. This practice respects each person’s preferred method of communication and ensures their voices are heard in a way that feels natural to them.
LEAP Centre offers coaching for parents, providing them with the tools and strategies needed to support their children in a neuro-affirming manner. This includes understanding sensory needs, communication preferences, and how to create a supportive home environment that aligns with neuro-affirming principles.
These therapies are delivered with a strong commitment to respecting neurodiversity, ensuring that each individual’s needs are met in a way that honours their identity and promotes their well-being. LEAP Centre’s approach is holistic, focusing on empowering both individuals and their support networks through understanding and acceptance.
